Doable Evangelism

http://doableevangelism.com/

In the spring of 2007 Immanuel hosted a Doable Evangelism seminar at our facility. It was a great ‘sledge hammer’ to begin to weaken the old evangelism paradigm that we believe needs to be deconstructed. They then offered a six-week follow-up course, coached by the DE Director, Randy Siever. We taught the course in one of our three Sunday adult education classes. People began to get it. We then proceeded to teach it in the other two adult classes and finally the Sr. High class. We consider DE as ‘Evangelism 101’. It presents ‘evangelism’ as a spiritual discipline in our daily lives rather than a church program.  DE functions from five assumptions about mission. We have added a sixth:

1.      Jesus is already there. DE is about participating with God. We assume He is already there. We depend on His passion more than our own. The Holy Spirit is pursuing missed ones ahead of us. He includes us because community is His design.

2.      People belong before they believe. Missed ones are our friends. Church exists to include, not exclude them. They discover faith as the Holy Spirit leads them. The church functions as a midwife.

3.      Conversations, not conversions. We count what matters. Conversations are doable for us. Conversions aren’t. Missed ones like to tell their stories. We like to listen and ask questions. Like Jesus did.

4.      Small is big. We do small things for God- five loaves and two fish- two small copper coins- a cup of waterHe makes a big deal out of it.

5.     God likes people. He loves us – but more importantly, He like us. He enjoys people and truly misses them.

6.      What is is not what will be. God is patiently working. We are patiently participating with Him. Patience is love waiting. We are involved in the adventure of the journey, waiting on God to produce the results.
